Organization Ideas ~ Ideas, sketches and quotes
What are your resolutions for 2009? If getting your scrapbook area in shape is one of them, then we're here to help. Each month we'll focus on a different weak point and give you ideas for how to shape it up. To get started, we're focusing on ideas, sketches and quotes.

Everyone needs a creativity boost at least once in a while. How do you keep your ideas, sketches and quotes organized? Here are a couple ideas to get you started:

1) Rolodex. Write down quotes you want to use on a card and file it in the appropriate category. Keep Rolodex cards in your purse so when your child says something you want to use later on a page, you can write it down and file it by child when you get home. Also works well for jotting down sketches and project ideas. You can sort sketches by the number of photos used on the layout. You can also attach photos of ideas and clippings from magazines to the Rolodex cards. The down side is that it may look messy and be difficult to see the different categories if you staple larger items and layouts clipped from magazines to the Rolodex cards.

2) Photo Album. If you take a lot of pictures of layouts and ideas you want to do, this may be the way for you. This is also a good idea if you don't like to cut or tear up your magazines - instead of tearing out an idea, you can take a picture of it. Add tabs to a photo album to customize it to the way you want to sort your pictures - by number of photos used, theme or color combination. You can also write quotes on index cards and have a section of the photo album for quotes and sayings. The downside to this is you're limited to the number of photo slots in the album and once you've maxxed out one section, it's harder to re-organize it to give more space to the section that needs it.

3) Recipe or Photo Box. Use tabbed dividers and add photos or magazine clippings to the appropriate section. Use index cards to attach smaller magazine clippings to and to write quotes and sayings on. This is by far, the easiest organization idea to create and use for organizing ideas. Simply drop the idea in the appropriate section and slide the dividers to give you more or less space for each section. The down side is that you do have to maintain it or it will become unmanagable with different sized clippings and idea cards going in every direction. Also, if the box becomes too full, it's hard to quickly flip through ideas without pulling the whole section out of the box.

4) 3-Ring Binder. This is the most versatile. You can use page protectors and drop in sheets of paper with different sketches, notes, quotes and sayings. Tear out pages from magazines and add them to appropriate sections. You can even add photo album sheets and photos. The down-side is that you're limited by the size of binder you have and the larger the binder, the more unmanageable it becomes.

5) Notebook or Journal. This is great for sayings, quotes, sketches and things you can write directly on the page. However, it becomes bulky if you staple and add ideas from magazines and photos to the pages. You're also limited to the number of pages in the notebook and have to keep in mind what you're going to do with the ideas you haven't used once you fill up the notebook.

So what's the best way to organize your ideas, sketches and quotes? It depends on you, your source for ideas (pictures, magazines, sketches), how you scrap, how portable you need it and it may be a combination of some of the above ideas. No matter which solution works for you, make sure you maintain it and periodically sort through and pull out the ideas you've used and the ideas that no longer appeal to you.
